This view of the choir stalls at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan shows an interior still under construction when the picture was made. Work on the Episcopal cathedral began in 1892, and the design shifted from a Romanesque-Byzantine plan to Gothic under architect Ralph Adams Cram around 1911, so the carved woodwork here reflects a building in transition. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its travel views of American cities and landmarks, recorded such sites for sale to tourists and publishers in the 1910s. Its large glass negatives capture fine detail in the carved wood and the vaulted space around it.
