John McGraw leads the New York Giants onto the field in this glass negative, dated to 1911, with the manager out front as the team takes the diamond. McGraw ran the club from 1902 into the early 1930s, and the 1911 Giants won the National League pennant before losing the World Series to the Philadelphia Athletics. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers, and it captures a routine pregame moment that fans of the period would have watched from the stands.
