Taken at the Polo Grounds in Upper Manhattan, this view shows the New York National League club in April 1913, at the start of the season. The ballpark sat on the rise of Coogan's Bluff and served as the Giants' home for decades, and under manager John McGraw the club was one of the strongest teams in the league. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a press photo agency that supplied newspapers with images of sports, news and city life. Its April 13, 1913 date places it at the opening weeks of that year's campaign.
