Jim Thorpe appears here in a New York Giants uniform at the Polo Grounds, the Giants' home ballpark in upper Manhattan. Thorpe had won the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, and in early 1913 he was stripped of those medals after it emerged he had played semi-professional baseball. The image is one of the Bain News Service glass negatives, and its 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so the date is an estimate rather than a firm record.
