Among the many Bain News Service views of baseball at the Polo Grounds, this one is set apart by its subject: not the field or the crowd, but the private box seats belonging to Frank Farrell, the gambling operator and businessman who held a stake in the New York Highlanders, later known as the Yankees. The Polo Grounds, on the upper end of Manhattan, was home to the Highlanders in these years, and owners' boxes like this one show how team executives watched games from close quarters. The negative dates to roughly 1903 to 1911, when Farrell was active in the club's affairs, and it was made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of city life.
