Two of the most celebrated pitchers of the early 1910s stand together in this glass negative from the Polo Grounds, the Giants' home in upper Manhattan. Christy Mathewson, a Hall of Fame right-hander, anchored the New York staff for well over a decade, and Jeff Tesreau, a hard-throwing righty, was one of the younger arms he helped develop. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a news service archive that documented sports and daily life in New York during the period. Its caption spells Mathewson's name "Matthewson," a common error in the period's press, and the date of 1914 was assigned later by researchers rather than recorded on the original.
