Dick Hennessy, a batboy and mascot for the New York Giants, is the subject of this view taken at the Polo Grounds, the team's home ballpark in upper Manhattan. The image is a glass negative from the Bain News Service, a photo agency that sold pictures of New York news, sports, and street life to newspapers. Around 1913, the Giants were among the strongest clubs in the National League, and team batboys and mascots were a familiar presence on the sidelines. The picture offers a glimpse of everyday game-day life from that era.
