Former heavyweight champion Jim Corbett sits at the center of this Bain News Service glass negative, photographed at Game One of the 1913 World Series at the Polo Grounds in New York on October 7. Seated to his left is Blossom Seeley, a vaudeville performer who was married to Giants pitcher Rube Marquard. Corbett had won the heavyweight title from John L. Sullivan in 1892 and later became an actor, so his presence in the stands drew notice. The photo captures how the World Series had become a gathering place for celebrities and entertainers as well as fans.
