Game 1 of the 1912 World Series, played at the Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan, is the event this glass negative records. The Giants hosted the Boston Red Sox there that October, in a Series that ran eight games, with one tie, before Boston took the title. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a news photo agency that sold pictures of current events to newspapers, so the image is a working record of the ballpark and its crowd. The title and date rest on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so they reflect a reconstruction rather than a caption written at the time.
