A glass negative made at the Polo Grounds, the New York Giants' home ballpark in upper Manhattan, shows John McGraw, the club's manager. The picture came from the Bain News Service, a news photo agency whose work now forms the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. McGraw had led the Giants since 1902, and in 1912 the club was one of the strongest in the National League and reached the World Series that fall. The title and date rest on research by the Society for American Baseball Research, since the original caption gives only McGraw's name and the team.
