Two New York Giants stand side by side at the Polo Grounds in this 1912 glass negative, infielder Tillie Shafer on the left and pitcher Rube Marquard on the right. Marquard was near the peak of his fame that year, when he won 19 consecutive games and became one of the most talked-about pitchers in the National League. The picture comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose glass negatives recorded the city's news, sports and street life in the early twentieth century.
