Rube Marquard, the left-handed pitcher shown here, was one of the best-known players on the New York Giants in the early 1910s, when the team was a powerhouse in the National League. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs made by the Bain News Service, which supplied pictures of sports, politics and daily life to newspapers across the country. Marquard came to New York in 1912 after a notable run with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and his 1912 season, which included a long winning streak, made him a popular figure in the city. Glass plates like this one were the standard working medium for press photographers of the period.
