Art Wilson, a catcher for the New York Giants, is shown in this 1912 portrait taken as part of the wider run of baseball photographs made in New York. Wilson worked as a backstop in the years when John McGraw's Giants were among the strongest teams in the National League, and the club reached the World Series in 1911 and 1912. The picture was made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with images of sports figures, politicians and street scenes. Its glass negative offers a clear view of how team players were presented to the public in the early 1910s.
