Art Wilson was a catcher for the New York Giants, and this glass negative captures him in the National League uniform of the period, a detail that places it firmly in the early 1910s. The image comes from the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of sports and news events in New York and beyond. Wilson caught for the Giants for several seasons and was known as a strong defensive catcher, a role that made him a familiar figure to fans at the Polo Grounds. Its survival as a glass plate, catalogued in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, is a useful reminder of how press photographs of this era were made and kept.
