Ray Caldwell, a right-handed pitcher for the New York American League club, is shown in this 1913 glass negative taken at the Polo Grounds in upper Manhattan. The team, then often called the Highlanders, shared the ballpark with the New York Giants, and the photograph comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news pictures to newspapers and magazines. The date is bracketed in the record and based on later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, so it reflects a considered estimate rather than a date written at the time. The image offers a glimpse of a ballplayer in the years before the Yankees name became permanent.
