The pitcher pictured here belongs to the New York Female Giants, a women's team that barnstormed through the 1910s, playing exhibition games that drew crowds curious about women competing at a sport then seen as men's territory. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency in New York, made pictures like this for newspapers and magazines, so the image reflects how the press packaged women's athletics for a public that was both amused and intrigued. The date of about 1913 comes from later research by baseball historians, not from the original caption.
