Wilbert Robinson, a former catcher, was serving on John McGraw's coaching staff with the New York Giants when this portrait was made. Robinson had played in the National League for years before turning to coaching, and he would later manage the Brooklyn club for nearly two decades, earning the nickname "Uncle Robbie." The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, made the glass negative, and its caption reads simply "Robinson, Giants." The 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research, not from the plate itself.
