Bain News Service captioned this glass negative "Batter up - Female Giants," placing one of the New York Female Giants at the plate. The team was a touring women's club that played exhibition games against men's and mixed squads in the 1910s, when women's baseball drew crowds but seldom won a lasting professional footing. Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers, recorded many such novelties, and the 1913 date comes from later research by the Society for American Baseball Research. The picture shows how far baseball's appeal had spread beyond the men's leagues.
