This full-length portrait shows the Irish tenor John McCormack seated and facing the camera in stage costume, a pose that let a publicity photograph show both the performer and his role. McCormack was one of the most popular concert and opera singers of the early 1900s, and his fame grew through live tours and the phonograph recordings he made for the Victor company. Photographs like this one circulated as publicity for his performances. The studio's name, E.F. Foley of New York, and the copyright notation on the print point to a commercial image registered for sale and distribution, a reminder of how stage celebrities were marketed in the period.
