Shown in a head-and-shoulders view turned to the left, John Erskine sits for this portrait by Pirie MacDonald, a New York studio known for its photographs of men. Erskine taught English at Columbia University and wrote novels that retold classical myths, including *The Private Life of Helen of Troy* (1925), while also working as a pianist and composer. The print was deposited for copyright, which is why this studio portrait from about 1929 is preserved in the Library of Congress collection.
