This cabinet card shows Mrs. Mary E. Bryan in a head-and-shoulders pose, turned to her left, a standard arrangement for studio portraits of the period. The card was produced by Ullman & Co. of New York, a commercial studio working in a city where photographers served a broad middle-class clientele. Cabinet cards, a larger mounted format than the earlier carte de visite, became popular in the 1870s, and families used them for display in parlors and albums. The record gives only a date range, so the exact year of the sitting is unknown, but the card's format and studio imprint place it firmly in the late nineteenth century.
