George Pierce Baker appears in this head-and-shoulders view turned to the right, in a 1926 portrait by Pirie MacDonald, a New York studio known for its pictures of men. Baker taught playwriting at Harvard, where his 47 Workshop nurtured writers including Eugene O'Neill, and he had recently moved his work to Yale. Worth noticing is how a studio devoted to male sitters captured a figure whose influence on American theater came largely through his students rather than his own plays.
