This cabinet card shows Herman Hollerith in a head-and-shoulders portrait, turned to his right, and was made by the New York studio of G.W. Pach around 1900. Hollerith is remembered as the inventor of the punched-card tabulating machine, which the U.S. Census Bureau used to process the 1890 census far faster than hand counting had allowed. He later founded the Tabulating Machine Company, whose successors eventually became part of IBM. Portraits like this one, sold in cardboard mounts, were a common way for professionals of the period to circulate their likenesses.
