Ruth Law stands for the camera carrying two boxes, one of them a map case she designed herself, a detail that suits a pilot who had to navigate long distances. Herbert Photos of New York made the portrait in 1916, probably not long after Law's record-setting flight from Chicago to Hornell, New York. Few women of the period flew at all, and Law became one of the best-known aviators of the 1910s, drawing crowds at exhibitions across the country. The picture presents her less as a daredevil than as a working professional with the tools of her trade.
