Shirley Chisholm is the subject of this head-and-shoulders portrait, shown in profile facing right, and she is identified here by her role as Congresswoman from New York. Chisholm was elected to the House of Representatives in 1968, becoming the first Black woman to serve in Congress, and she represented a district in Brooklyn for seven terms. The portrait belongs to the Library of Congress's Congressional Portrait Collection, a body of photographs of lawmakers from the 1960s and 1970s, and it captures the formal style of official congressional imagery from that era.
