Arturo Toscanini is shown here in a head-and-shoulders pose turned to the left, a format that keeps attention on his face and the stern concentration for which he was known. The print carries the imprint of V. Laviosa, a studio whose name links Rome and New York, a reminder of how often Italian musicians and their portraitists moved between the two cities in the 1920s. Toscanini, one of the most celebrated conductors of his era, was then at the height of an international career that would later bring him to the New York Philharmonic and the NBC Symphony. Portraits like this one were widely circulated to promote concerts and recordings.
