Harvey S. Firestone, the Akron, Ohio, tire manufacturer, sits for this 1915 portrait by Pirie MacDonald, a New York studio photographer known for his formal studies of prominent men. Firestone had built the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company into a major supplier to the booming automobile industry by the time of the sitting, and his face was becoming familiar to a national audience. MacDonald's work from these years, now held in the Library of Congress, offers a useful record of how American business leaders presented themselves in the early twentieth century.
