This glass negative shows a rear observation car of the New York Central Railroad, the carriage at the end of a passenger train with a platform or large windows for watching the track fall away behind. The record gives no date, but the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds plates made by the Bain News Service, a New York City picture agency that worked mainly from about 1900 through the 1920s. The title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives or cards, and it has not been independently verified. Railroad photographs from this period often document equipment for publication, so the car's design and fittings are the main things to examine.
