Only the left third of this three-part panorama survives in the collection, so the view shows a stretch of the Mohawk River at Little Falls with New York Central trains passing through the valley. The image is a large glass negative, 18 by 22 inches, made by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1890. The company was known for its wide-format views of American towns and landscapes, and the valley's rail line and river route were the main corridor linking eastern New York to the Great Lakes. Little Falls grew up around the rapids that gave it its name, and its rail and canal connections made it an important industrial stop.
