Little is recorded about this room beyond its catalog label, "interior E 2," which suggests it belonged to a numbered series of domestic views. The Detroit Publishing Company sold photographs of American cities and landscapes to travelers and buyers in the early twentieth century, and its photographers often recorded everyday settings alongside monuments. Made on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate between about 1900 and 1910, the negative captures a New York living space from a period when interiors were far less commonly photographed than streets and skylines. Its furnishings and layout offer a glimpse of domestic life in the city at the turn of the century.
