Unlike the street scenes that dominate many photographic surveys of New York, this 8 by 10 inch glass negative turns the camera inside a tenement house. It dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, a period when reformers were pressing the city to address overcrowded housing, and New York passed its Tenement House Act in 1901. Interior work required long exposures and bulky equipment, so the picture offers a direct view of the cramped domestic spaces where many working families lived.
