A narrow courtyard inside a New York City tenement is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views made roughly between 1900 and 1910. Such courtyards were the only open space for many crowded buildings, serving as light wells, drainage points and shared yards, and they drew attention from housing reformers who pressed for better air and sanitation. The Detroit Publishing Company sold views of American cities and landscapes, so this plate offers a record of how working-class housing looked in the city during those years.
