The New Quotation Room at the New York Stock Exchange, where this image was made around 1928, was a working floor for the exchange's communications. Its telephone operators sat at banks of switchboards, relaying prices and orders between the trading floor and brokerage offices across the city and beyond. The photograph is a useful record of a role that was overwhelmingly filled by women in this period, and of the wired infrastructure that kept the market moving in the years just before the crash of 1929.
