A telephone operator seated at her booth on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange is the focus here, shown beside the new quotation system that the Exchange introduced around 1928. Before such systems were in place, price information moved across the floor by runners, hand signals and chalkboards, so a booth like this one marked a shift toward faster, centralized handling of market prices. The Exchange had a long record of adopting new communication technology as trading volume grew through the 1920s, and photographs like this one documented its modern facilities for the public and for its own records.
