A telephone operator works at her post in this c1928 view of the New York Stock Exchange, part of a newly introduced system for relaying price quotations. In the late 1920s, the trading floor depended on telephone and ticker lines that carried orders from brokerage offices and sent prices back out, so the operator was one link in a fast-moving chain. The picture carries the Exchange's own copyright notice, which suggests the institution wanted to show the public its modern methods. The market crashed in October 1929, so scenes like this one document a busy, technology-driven trading room just before the collapse.
