The final turn for the winning post at Gravesend Track, in Brooklyn, is caught in the moment before the finish, when the leading horses swing toward the line. The picture is a stereograph, a card holding two nearly identical photographs that a handheld viewer merged into a single three-dimensional scene. B.W. Kilburn, a New Hampshire photographer working in Littleton, produced and sold many such cards around 1909 for parlor viewing. Gravesend was one of the best-known racing venues near New York City in that era, so the card captures a popular spectator sport at the height of its appeal.
