This print is titled simply "The old post office, New York," but the record gives no date, and the shelflist card's name, Briem, is unverified. The title most likely refers to the federal post office in City Hall Park, on Park Row, a large Second Empire building designed by Alfred B. Mullett and completed in the late 1870s. Surrounded by courts, City Hall, and the city's newspaper offices, it was a familiar landmark of lower Manhattan until it was demolished in 1939, so views of it now document a vanished part of the city.
