What sets this plate apart is its engraver's imprint, "eng'd by P.R. Maverick, 65 Liberty Street," which places the work in a New York shop of the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. The plate belongs to the New York Society Library, a subscription library founded in 1754 that ranks among the city's oldest. Its members pasted plates like this one inside their books to mark ownership. The catalog also lists Native American subjects, a theme that appears now and then in early American bookplates. This impression was printed in 1907, though the plate itself dates from roughly 1775 to 1811.
