Taken on December 18, 1913, this view of Fifth Avenue in Manhattan shows the thoroughfare at a time when motorcars were becoming a common sight on its busy streets. The photograph belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news and street pictures that Bain, a working news photographer, supplied to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The catalog record tags automobiles as a subject, a reminder that the avenue, long lined with fashionable shops and the homes of wealthy families, was adjusting quickly to motor traffic. Pictures like this capture the gradual shift of city streets from horses and carriages toward the automobile era.
