Easter Sunday on Fifth Avenue in 1912 captures the city's long-running custom of the Easter Parade, when New Yorkers dressed in new spring clothes and strolled the avenue after church services. By the early twentieth century the parade was a fixture of the city's social calendar, drawing crowds of churchgoers, shoppers and onlookers. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of news photographs taken by a New York photographer and agency whose work documents the everyday life and public events of the city in the years before 1920.
