A welcome sign strung across the street at 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, tied in the record to Charles Lindbergh, makes this picture stand apart from the city views around it. Lindbergh had completed the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic in May 1927, and New York gave him a large welcome that June, with crowds lining the avenues. Double-decker buses, a familiar sight on Fifth Avenue at the time, share the frame and show how the street looked during the celebration. The photograph comes from the files of the New York World-Telegram and the Sun, a major city newspaper of the period.
