Crowds gathered on the steps and walk of a Jamestown, New York, library in this print from about 1905, a reminder that the building was a busy civic gathering place as well as a reading room. Public libraries of this period, many of them funded by Andrew Carnegie, were often seen as a sign of a town's ambitions, and they drew people of all ages and backgrounds. The record does not say what drew this crowd that day, so the scene is best read through the streets and clothing of the time, which reflect a small industrial city in the early twentieth century.
