Looking out from Independence Hill over the town, this view centers on the Bishop's Palace in the rear of Monterrey, Mexico. D.P. Whiting, a captain in the 7th Infantry, drew the scene, F. Swinton worked it on stone, and G. & W. Endicott of New York printed it in color around 1847. The city had been captured by American forces under Zachary Taylor in September 1846, so the print reflects public interest in the Mexican War. The title spells the city "Monterey," an older variant of the modern "Monterrey.
