Murray Hill's distributing reservoir was one of the largest public works built to bring Croton River water into Manhattan. Completed in 1842 and fed by the Croton Aqueduct, it occupied a full city block between Fifth and Sixth Avenues on a rise that gave the water enough pressure to reach upper floors. Nathaniel Currier issued this hand-colored lithograph the same year, when the city was proud of its new supply. The print treats the reservoir less as plumbing than as a landmark of a rapidly growing city.
