This print shows the toppling of the equestrian statue of King George III at Bowling Green in New York City on July 9, 1776, the same day the Declaration of Independence was read to Washington's troops. The gilded lead statue, raised in 1770, was pulled down by a crowd and later melted into musket balls, a fitting end for a symbol of royal authority. Photography did not exist in 1776, so this is a later rendering of the event, and it is worth noticing how it reflects the way nineteenth-century artists remembered the Revolution.
