The sculpted pair here is a Washington and Lafayette group, shown mid-handshake, a gesture that stands for the alliance between the two men during the American Revolution. Lafayette, a young French nobleman, joined the Continental Army in 1777 and became one of Washington's most trusted officers, and the French support he helped secure proved decisive at Yorktown. A statue of this kind in 1920 spoke to the friendship between the United States and France, which had grown warmer after the First World War. The photograph records a public monument at a moment when such memorials drew large crowds and were often unveiled with ceremony.
