Few liners drew a bigger crowd to New York's harbor than the Cunard ship Lusitania did on her first arrival in September 1907, when she completed her maiden crossing from Liverpool. Built on the Clyde for the transatlantic race, she was among the fastest ships afloat, and her speed and size made her a symbol of the era's ocean-liner rivalry. The print captures the ship's arrival as a maritime event, when steamship landings were major news and the Hudson waterfront bustled with passengers, tugs and cargo. Later, the ship's sinking by a German submarine in 1915 gave this early moment a sadder significance for viewers.
