Photographed from astern, this view shows the Cunard liner Lusitania on her maiden voyage to New York in 1907, when she was one of the largest and fastest passenger ships afloat. Launched on the Clyde in 1906, she won the Blue Riband for the fastest Atlantic crossing soon after entering service. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs, which documents New York life and events in the early twentieth century. Her later sinking by a German submarine in 1915 gives the image added weight for many viewers.
