Crowds packed the foreground as the new Cunard liner *Lusitania* was warped, or hauled by lines, toward its berth in New York in September 1907. The ship had been built on the Clyde and was in its first season on the Atlantic, having just set a record for the westbound crossing that drew attention on both sides of the ocean. Passengers, well-wishers and curious onlookers often gathered at the piers to watch arrivals like this one, and the people massed here show how strongly the great liners captured public interest. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain news collection.
