Here the Cunard liner Lusitania is being warped, or hauled by lines, into a new pier in New York Harbor. Warping was a common way to position a large ocean liner at a berth without relying on its own engines, and the work depended on dockhands and tugs. Lusitania had entered service in 1907 and was among the fastest and largest passenger ships of its day, so a picture of her maneuvering into a new berth in 1908 documents the busy Atlantic liner trade at the port. The photograph comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news pictures taken in New York in the early 1900s.
